Kitchen 97 Gallery

In a very small older home, this kitchen was closed off from the family living area and dining room by small doors. As a result, with only one window and exterior door, the kitchen was a cave. We removed the wall (seen to the right in the before photo), and bumped a bit into the living space to create an eating counter for the growing family. This way, the mother can see her children playing in the living room when she is working in the kitchen. We installed taller upper cabinetry and wrapped the cabinets around the wall with the powder room, gaining extra storage space there as well. This allowed us to enlarge the small window giving them more natural light and a great view of their large back yard. Another plus for mom when the children are outside playing. We installed the maximum amount of cabinetry the space could hold, and yet opened up the space so it seems much larger than the actual square footage would suggest. We kept the door to the formal dining room the same size to keep the formality. The new flooring we installed is tile, which is easy to clean and neutral in color, so they can accent with any color they choose. The lighted beveled cabinets above the corner give them attractive display space that is visible from the living area. The yellow decorative pendant lights over the eating counter are their choice for a complimentary color for the decor.
