Kitchen-304

Split foyer home in Annandale, VA has been the home of this family of four. As their kids were growing up, their lives and activities growing as well. The old Galley kitchen separated by walls from the rest of living space was no longer acceptable to them and their busy schedules.

As the current kitchen, the sink faced one wall and all appliances the other wall which was between kitchen and dining room. The Breakfast room was too small, overpowered by very busy wallpaper.

South wall had two low windows which limited the use of that wall for cabinetry or furniture.

Design staff proposed to open up the entire first floor in order to have a better traffic flow pattern and more up to date open layout.

The bearing wall of kitchen and dining room was removed and structural beams controlled the opening. All bulkheads and contains were removed, couple of the closets demolished.

The south windows are replaced with wider but shorter one. This enabled us to move the main sink, dishwasher and more cabinetry on the wall. A wrap around of cabinetry connected the old part to new kitchen part which used to be the breakfast area.

All gas and ventilation lines were moved into old sink space and this made it possible to free up the dining room wall. A portion of the wall that was backing up to Living room was home for a counter depth fridge and large pantry.

We have placed a center Island between the kitchen and dining room . this served as their eating table, extra storage and created a very easy path from all sides.

By the way of installing new hardwood floor in kitchen, front hall and dining room the seamless connection was much more apparent.

Use of lighter maple cabinetry with contrasting darker granite counter tops and complimenting hard wood floors made the place attractive to all their family gatherings.

Use of recess lighting, under cabinet and pendent lights also made the place a light brighter and completely transformed from the old dark and floral wallpaper look.

Mixed glass backsplash tiles soften the new look and created an attractive sight.

Now this family and their friends have a bigger place to hang out and enjoy each others company.
