The Program Owner of this Fairfax Station (VA) late-1990’s custom home had come to recognize limitations to the home’s original country-style kitchen that prohibited merging use requirements. They sought to enhance the possibilities of the existing space plan, improve traffic and efficiencies and significantly upgrade the interior itself. Some of the principal program requirements included: develop a floor plan that accommodates an all L-shaped food prep island/ dining counter with seating for six; remove bearing wall between kitchen and dining room to meet new floor plan requirements; shifts load points to new structural supports to be concealed within new interior augment available wall surface needed to install larger cabinet’s storage by re-routing HVAC ducting and eliminating ceiling-flush bulkheads; reallocate appliance locations to take full advantage of incremental footprint enlargement; new plan concentrates on protected work triangles; substantially improved traffic; identify convenient places for high-end appliances such as espresso maker; wine refrigerator; owner also wants professional-caliber appliances with increase capacities Implement a sweeping improvement in interior décor stressing natural wood; ceramic tile Overall, resultant interior features visual continuum; natural light in a textured environment comprised of light or neutral colors Other finish work includes: porcelain tile flooring throughout suite of rooms that includes breakfast area decorative ceramic tile backsplashes cherry wood cabinets; glass-facing display cabinets custom mantle cook top hood many finely articulated interior design details: flutes, mouldings corbels. recessed lights; pendant lights; under cabinets lighting
