2006 Best of Best Design Award Silver Award Winner

This 1970′s kitchen was dated and separated from the main traffic flow to the family room and the outside deck area where the family liked to entertain frequently. They wanted to open the kitchen to the family room and directly to the deck area, so the traffic would not have to go around through the family room first, and get a larger area for a breakfast bar, as well as a larger window to use for serving to the outside. In order to fulfill their wishes, we bumped the rear wall of the kitchen back a foot, reducing the size of the powder room behind it, widening the hallway to the garage door, and allowing us to put cabinetry all the way back to the door, including a decorative display niche with lighting and glass shelves. We enlarged the window above the sink and put in a large multi-level island with a breakfast area, cooktop, decorative green granite like the homeowners had seen on a trip to Italy, and decorative accents such as corbals supporting the granite top of the breakfast bar. We used a light green glaze on the contemporary shaker cabinets, to pick up the green of the granite counters, and installed French doors to the deck area, giving them multiple access to the deck. The wine bar is located on its own wall near the family room for easy access just outside the kitchen prep areas. We installed pendant lighting to pick up on the ochre tones of the walls.
