Keeping Cool in All Seasons is Goal for Homeowner Adding Wine Cellar

According to oenophile, Craig MacAllister, “Temperature control is essential to keeping wines drinkable over the years.” Apparently, MacAllister made it a strong point that these classic and expensive beverages need to mature properly, otherwise they will go bad.

MacAllister and his wife, Diane, express strong interests in wines. However, before they got their dream wine cellar, they experienced a few bumps on the road. As the first few of their many collections grew, the couple tried to transform the spacious area on their home’s lower level into a makeshift wine cellar. But soon enough, they realized, nothing beats having a real one.

His situation “…called for real space planning skills.” They teamed up with Michael Nash Design, Build and Homes because MacAllister saw one of their cellars in a home nearby and was impressed by the firm’s reputation.

Shawn Nazemian, one of Michael Nash’s top designers, and the top manager for MacAllister’s project, made it a point throughout the entire process that wine cellars should have:

An efficient thermal system

The cellar must be equipped with its own thermostat to keep temperatures regulated. “A thermally efficient membrane is essential to a wine cellar’s performance.” said Nazemian. Humidity must remain in the 50 to 70 percent range with temperatures between 58-62 degrees.

A sealed frosted-glass door

Custom-designed, frosted-glass doors help keep the cool air in. Too hot and too cold environments aren’t suited well for wines. For them to mature into the right taste that perfectly complements specific dishes, they must be nurtured in an environment well-prepped for its needs.

A mahogany color scheme

Dark red mahogany is a classic color for wine cellars. It gives that deep and sophisticated feeling of being in an enclosed space of fine drinks. The warm color scheme often reflects a vintage outcome, a perfect finishing touch to the project.

The end result pleased both MacAllister and his wife, Diane. For Oenophiles, a great wine cellar is definitely a must.
