2011 NARI Capital CotY Finalist Award Winner, Residential Exterior under $100,000

A 1970 split level single family home located in a very convenient upscale neighborhood in Arlington, VA. The exterior of this house have been neglected for years. All other surrounding neighbors have done major exterior and interior remodeling which caused this homeowner act on his property as well. Through several consultation meetings homeowner and our design staff put together an exterior layout to create an Art & Craft design for this home.
It all got started by excavating in the front and left of the house and put a wrap around all stone porches. With black metal roof, large tapered columns blue and grey random style flag stone, beaded stain ceiling paneling and an octagonal seating area on the left side of this porch.
Front porch has wide entry stairs and another set of stairs leading to the back yard. The entire face of the house was removed. new insulation, sheeting, Tyvek and Hardi plank siding was put in its e place. The brick facing was covered with a contrasting color Hardi plank siding.
All exterior landscaping was rearrange and graded away from the new porch. French drains, short shrubberies and sod have covered the remaining parts of front side and back yard. This new porch all done in maintenance free products were used in the project. All exterior walls of homes were modified with new headers to allow much larger custom made windows, new front doors garage doors, and French side and back doors.
The high efficiency low-e windows have made this project an air tight home. The use of contrasting, hardy plank siding of dark and light blue complementing the stone color used in the front and side porch. The custom made Mahogany front door with leaded glass was planned into the front elevation both to let more light and wider entrance into Living room.
The art and craft design has been implemented in the front gable of front porch, prairie style grill pattern of windows and doors, tapered columns sitting over stoned columns and leaded glass front door. The choice of decorative lights used on exterior and over front entrance also have more to add to final look.
Smoking a cigar while relaxing on his rocking chair in his front porch is the most rewarding past time.
