A family of three lived in a a colonial home in Burke for over 20 years, without any major changes done to the house, and now comes a time that he is retiring and wants to spend more time at home enjoying backyard while wife gardening and entertaining indoor and outdoor.
Wall between family room and kitchen restricts circulation; no visual linkage; spaces are uncomfortably tight, excessively compartmentalized
load-bearing wall that routes plumbing and electrical
Lack of cabinet, storage space; limited counter surfaces
Lack of natural light combined with dark builder grade cabinets and floors result in gloomy interior
Owner, reaching retirement, wants to develop outdoor space
screen porch for insect-resistant indoor/outdoor use; deck for open air
rear elevation situated on steep slope presents significant need to re-grade
footing and foundation require 8’ excavation
Major accomplishment is ability to have a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor transition and nice flow for larger group gatherings
