Unfinished basement of 15 years home in Suburb of Vienna, Virginia was owned by a retired couple wanting to expand their horizon of using the basement for more future gatherings and other hobbies.
The have a list of request for the space:
1) steam room with large bathroom,
2) laundry room with sink and lots of storage,
3) a Media area,
4) Craft/sewing room,
5)an open exercise area,
6) a decent size bar,
7) wine room and
8) entertainment area.
Space was limited; several structure steel beams were on the way of open floor plan. List of objects were too much for the space.
The stairway from main level to basement was narrow and needed to be widened and opened up. The HVAC and water heater locations were on the way of the new floor plan and needed to be relocated.
There was one French door with areaway to allow natural light in and he had to use that area as best as it could be use for main entertainment area. Tow vertical post were repositioned to open up traffic flow.
At far end of this basement, we have designed an open space separated by archway and two knee walls. One for exercise area and the other for sewing/ craft and gift wrapping area. We are rebuild some of the customers old built and fit them into a long walls for display shelving wrapped in fluted molding & crown molding. A set of glass French doors separated
The center part of this basement was taken over with customer cabinetry for bar area and hanging ledge on the opposite wall for added drink placement or maybe other uses such as work station.
There was a wasted space between staircase and mechanical room that we were able to tack in a wine room with a symbolic glass door showing it off.
The bar was made out of dark cherry wood and paneling , on the ceiling a bulkheads wrapped in matching wood and crown outlining the bar stools with embedded LED lighting.
Just to left of the bar, under a bump out addition there was space that we have created to be the media room separated by an Archway from rest of great room.
The design for lighting lay-out has had an incredible result on brightness of this project.
We have installed a wide plank Brazilian cherry wood floor throughout to further extenuate the openness of this space.
An area of 10’ x 12’ was designated for new bathroom equipped with a steam sauna/with speakers, double vanities, separate water closet and bench for changing area.
A large size marble looking tile and closet inlays has contributed to this spa style bathroom.
