PROBLEMS/ GOALS

Existing space is 2,500 square foot partially finished (shelled-in) lower level suite that includes fireplace. Owners were utilizing as open entertainment area zoned for billiards, ping pong, electronic entertainment. Cased-in vertical support shafts are plainly visible from throughout. Open cavernous expanse, however, stripes the suite of necessary human-scale—the effect being that of an overly large suburban recreation room.

The primary goal, was to scale-down the massive openness, delineating activity areas with a series of well-articulated and varied interior focal points that are self-contained, appropriate to use-objectives and integrated into the larger scheme.

Program requirements include diagonal limestone flooring throughout basement except for exercise room which has wide plank engineered floor  40’ two-level L-shaped bar wine cooler, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave well-defined casual seating area with floor to ceiling stoned walls. 14’ x 20’ exercise area with sauna Frameless steam shower Electronic entertainment area reading zone featuring long wall of bookcases Owner’s private art studio.

SOLUTIONS

In order to bring plumbing to bar area and steam shower we had to bust concrete and re-route the plumbing Stonework:

The double layer of exotic granite stone on the bar is one of the nicer features of this project 4 stone columns to delineate open media area (adjacent to bar) stone course—7’ from ground– to match columns L-shaped wall of stone defines casual seating area remove existing fireplace cladding; fireplace re-faced to the ceiling with limestone (acid-washed for rough finish 12’ x 20’ finished with crown molding and lighting for owner’s art studio.

Lighting and Sound:

built-in soffit, fascia with crown molding for indirect lighting wall scones low voltage recessed halogen lighting throughout 20 speaker Bose “Surround Sound” with independently zoned access for each room HTML wiring for cable.

This project overall achieved the customer’s vision to divide a very large and open space into a more suitable entertainment area for their children, their envisioned high end bar, and yet leaving enough room to have sufficient space to host large elegant parties.
