1960’s Rambler in a busy neighborhood of Arlington Ridge occupied by a working mom and a couple of teenagers. They live a busy and on the go life, thus their kitchen is the headquarter to this command station.
Challenges: small (galley) and run down kitchen, small adjacent family room separated by a very tiny powder room from kitchen. Dark wooden wall paneling and an all old brick wood burning fireplace made the family room less desirable.
Old cast iron plumbing pipe, mud based plastered tile walls, brick framing rather than conventional wood frame walls are all contributed to the hardness of this project.
The exterior walls had no insulation, or proper electrical work and they all needed to be revisited and updated.
Mom wanted an open floor plan while she wanted a very timeless and classic look to maintain with characteristic of the original home.
Design team suggested to remove the powder room, relocating all the plumbing and removal of bearing middle wall and opened up the kitchen into the family room.
The old 6’x6’ covered porch was re framed and become part of the new kitchen. The new exterior door to the sidewalk was implemented, while the back wall was taken over with a new range top surround by two windows.
Back wall of the family room was widened and taken over by a large French door to allow maximum daylight into the old dark family room.
The old paneling was all bleached and lightened to complement new kitchen cabinets while the old fireplace was revamped to new gas burning unit covered with a contemporary glass and stone tiles.
The bookcase surrounding the fireplace was redone to brighten up the space with much needed lighting fixtures. A new barn door was placed in basement entrance to active easy passage while offering a classic flair
The new classic shaker style white cabinetry and carefully selected marble top and back splash has made this project to stand tall.
The distressed dark middle island cabinets bring back the authenticity of original home to this new kitchen.
