Basic Basement Insulation Tips

Winter is just around the corner, how is your basement doing so far? During the next months of deep frost penetration, it is crucial to insulate your basement to achieve the energy and comfort goals in your home. Here are 3 basic tips for insulating your basement.

Control Moisture

Bulk moisture – the flow of water through any holes and cracks into your home’s basement walls. These small cracks, as harmless as they appear, can cause major problems such as humidity conditions which produces mold and odor. How do you control moisture?

  1. Add a sill gasket to provide air sealing
  2. Keep all untreated wood materials away from earth contact
  3. Slope the earth away from all sides of the house for at least a minimum of 5 feet
  4. Damp-proof the footing of the foundation wall to prevent moisture due to capillary action

Eliminate Pests

Termites commonly plague household basements. These wood-eating insects don’t eat insulation materials, however they dig into these materials to find more food sources. One effective strategy is using vision strips. Since termite holes are not visible, vision strips make them noticeable. Thus, pest control measures can immediately be made.

Seal Air Leaks

During winter, cool air from the outside is drawn into the basement through leaks, which then displaces the air. This occurrence is called the chimney effect.

To prevent this occurrence, it’s best to seal the top and bottom sides of rim joist activities. Remember that cracks and gaps may not always be visible, but they can still be present. You can use spray foam to fill gaps and cracks from 1/4 inch to 3 inches. Also, you can use caulk, which by the way is the best solution to cracks and gaps. Use caulk to seal gaps that are 1/4 inch or less.

If left unattended, your basement can become a major cause of higher electricity bills and poor indoor air quality.
