Before:
This wall was removed to open up the kitchen to the family room
This small addition replaced a bay window that the family had been squeezing into as a breakfast room. Their kitchen had doors and walls dividing it from the dining and family rooms that flanked it, and it was tight and cut off. There was not enough room to eat and not enough room for storage. In addition, there was one unused wall on the family room side that was wasted space. The entire room needed to be reconfigured to fit better into the space, and they needed to have a larger area to eat. We created the breakfast addition and removed part of the wall to the family room, opening the two rooms to each other and eliminating the door and narrow doorway. In its place, we put a serving counter that can be used as a bar, with a seating counter at bar height in the family room. The addition also made room for a larger island, to help with food preparation, as well as a desk area for the kids to do homework. The addition feels much larger than it really is, because of how much better the space is being utilized in the kitchen now. We also installed cabinets up to the ceiling for additional storage.
